Battery design for medical and portable equipment starts with the device operating requirements. Voltage, runtime, peak load, available space, charging method, connector, environmental conditions and certification route all affect the final pack configuration. HSS Energy supports compact lithium-ion and LiFePO4 battery development from initial specification through sample validation and production.

Medical and portable equipment battery solution overview
Portable medical and electronic equipment often has strict limits on battery size and weight while still requiring predictable runtime and stable power delivery. The first design step is to confirm the device requirement rather than selecting a battery only by voltage and Ah.
· Operating voltage and allowable voltage range
· Required operating time or backup time
· Average, continuous and peak current
· Maximum battery dimensions and weight
· Charging method and charging interface
· Connector and cable requirements
· Operating and storage temperature
· Target market and required documentation

For compact lithium-ion projects, Grade A cell options can include EVE, DMEGC, BAK, LG and Samsung, subject to the device specification, cell availability and project requirements. Cell selection also considers capacity consistency, internal resistance, discharge capability, operating temperature, size and supply continuity.
Medical equipment battery projects typically require tighter control of electrical and mechanical compatibility because the battery is part of a complete device. The exact compliance route depends on the end product and target market, so battery documentation should be confirmed together with the device certification plan.
|
Design Point |
Why It Matters |
|
Stable output |
Supports predictable device operation across the usable battery range |
|
Runtime |
Must match the intended examination, monitoring or mobile-use period |
|
Peak load |
Motors, pumps, displays, radios or processors can create short-duration current peaks |
|
Size and weight |
Portable equipment often has fixed battery compartments or ergonomic limits |
|
Temperature |
Battery charge/discharge limits must match the intended operating environment |
|
Traceable specification |
Approved battery configuration should remain controlled after device validation |
Portable equipment may place greater emphasis on compact dimensions, low mass, repeated charging and flexible interfaces. A suitable pack should be designed around the real load profile rather than using nominal capacity as the only selection factor.
· Portable printers and handheld instruments: runtime plus transient current demand
· Monitoring and communication devices: stable DC output and standby operation
· Smart mobile devices: compact dimensions, charging interface and enclosure fit
· Robotics and mobile equipment: continuous current, peak load and optional communication
· Backup modules: predictable runtime, low self-discharge and simple serviceability
BMS configuration is selected according to pack voltage, cell chemistry and device requirements. Standard protection functions can include overcharge, over-discharge, over-temperature, short-circuit and over-current protection, together with cell balancing and temperature monitoring where required.
Communication can be added when the host equipment needs battery status or control data. Project options can include Bluetooth, RS485 and CAN. The final protocol, data definition and hardware interface are confirmed with the customer before sample approval.

Battery packs undergoing multi-channel electrical testing
Certification requirements must be confirmed according to the final battery configuration, end-product category and destination market. Depending on the project, documentation may include UN38.3 and MSDS, while selected portable rechargeable battery projects may require IEC 62133-2 / CB, CE/RoHS or market-specific certification such as KC.
Certification scope is model-specific. A report or certificate for one battery pack must not be treated as automatic coverage for another configuration.
